KnowledgeOwl on a compliance bonanza
European data hosting, SOC 2 audit, VPAT assessment: Software company wants their customers to know they're safe and cared for.
BOULDER, CO — KnowledgeOwl, a B Corp-certified knowledge base software company, today announced three projects aimed at making life easier for the people who choose, buy, and approve its software: a SOC 2 audit now underway, an upcoming European-hosted version of KnowledgeOwl, and a completed third-party accessibility assessment with its first round of fixes in progress.
None of these are the flashy features that make headlines. But for the IT, security, legal, and procurement teams who have to sign off before anyone can start writing documentation, they are often the difference between a quick yes and months of back-and-forth.
"In a world where AI tools are everywhere and data feels like it's going everywhere with them, people want to know exactly who they're trusting with their information," said Marybeth Alexander, CEO of KnowledgeOwl. "We've always taken that trust seriously. This year we decided to put it in writing in the formats our customers' security and procurement teams already know, so they don't have to take our word for it."
SOC 2: Less paperwork for customers' security teams
KnowledgeOwl has always been glad to complete customers' security questionnaires and vendor assessments, and has passed them consistently. It also publishes a self-assessment through the Cloud Security Alliance's STAR Registry. Still, customers told the team that their security departments would rather review a report they already know and trust than run their own review from scratch.
So KnowledgeOwl listened. The company has begun a SOC 2 audit, which will produce an independent attestation report that customers can hand straight to their security teams. Customers can follow its progress on the SOC 2 page of the KnowledgeOwl Support knowledge base.
KnowledgeOwl EU: Your data, where you need it
KnowledgeOwl is currently hosted on Amazon Web Services in the United States. Many of its international customers, and the organizations they work with, need their data stored in Europe.
KnowledgeOwl EU, a version of KnowledgeOwl with all data hosted in the European Union, is launching soon. Customers will be able to choose the version that fits their requirements: data hosted in North America or data hosted in the EU. Organizations interested in KnowledgeOwl EU can join the waitlist to hear as soon as it launches.
Accessibility: Formalizing a long-held commitment
Accessibility has long been part of how KnowledgeOwl works. The team has built custom, accessible themes for customers and works with them on accessibility questions whenever they come up. Now that commitment has an official record.
In October 2026, Accessible.org completed a third-party audit of KnowledgeOwl against WCAG 2.2 Level A and AA. It covered the reader-facing knowledge base, the KnowledgeOwl authoring app, and PDF exports. The results are documented in an Accessibility Conformance Report (ACR) based on the VPAT 2.5 template. Government agencies and educational institutions, both longtime KnowledgeOwl customers, often require this kind of document before they buy software.
KnowledgeOwl is now working through its first round of remediation based on the audit's findings. Customers and prospects can request a copy of the ACR by emailing support@knowledgeowl.com.
"The people reading our customers' knowledge bases are students, parents, citizens, and employees with every kind of need," said Alexander. "Getting an outside assessment showed us exactly where we can do better, and we're already doing that work. We're really excited to share it with our customers and their readers."
Built around customers
All three projects started from the same place: conversations with customers. KnowledgeOwl's team regularly hears what is slowing down a purchase, a renewal, or a rollout, and these were the requests that kept coming up.
"Compliance work isn't glamorous, and we know that," said Alexander. "But when one of our customers can send a report to their security team, or tell their legal department their data stays in the EU, or hand a VPAT to their procurement office, their day gets a little easier. That's what we're here for."
